Ouray County PeaceJam is dedicated to engaging young leaders who are committed to making a positive impact in their communities. We aim to inspire students from Ridgway and Ouray School Districts to take action and create meaningful change through service projects.
Helping the Ute Mountain Ute tribe in Towaoc, Colorado
by bringing winter clothing items in October and summer items at their Bear Dance and Pow Wow in June. We bring household items, bedding, books and toys. Peacejammers have had the opportunity to interact and learn about the Ute culture while there.
Ouray County PeaceJam is a non-profit organization (99-4892644) and is a local chapter of the International PeaceJam Foundation (info@peacejam.org). Interested students wanting to do community service are welcome from the Ridgway and Ouray School Districts. After school children from Voyager (the Ridgway youth center) can also join in some of our service projects.
Making Christmas and Hanukkah and Valentine’s Day cards for Veterans and Senior Citizens
Approx. 2,000 Christmas & Hanukkah cards are made to make sure the Veteran’s at the VA Western Colorado Health Care System and the senior facilities in Montrose, Olathe, and Delta have some holiday cheer and know young people care about them. We Christmas Carol at the VA and at Valley Manor Care Center, too. For Valentines Day all the senior facilities are given cards, as well.

Sveri Stromsta May was a teacher at Loy Norrix High School in Kalamazoo, Michigan where she taught from 1998 to 2021. The Loy Norrix PeaceJam became a local member of the International PeaceJam Foundation in 2002. Her PeaceJam members met every Thursday morning before 1st period. They did 45 service projects a year. Along with local projects she took PeaceJammers to Boston, Washington DC, New York City and the United Nations, twice to Peru, India, Vietnam, Cuba and South Africa. The service project in Kenya got cancelled due to the COVID. Sveri received a Lifetime Award from PeaceJam for her volunteer PeaceJam efforts in 2019.
Sveri and her husband John moved to Ridgway in 2021 to be closer to her daughter, son-in law and grandson. PeaceJam is available for students from Ridgway and Ouray Schools who wish to do community service projects. Approximately 25 service projects a year are accomplished with the hopes that the Ouray County PeaceJammers can see other community service projects that they would like to see and help organize.
